Proclamation Recognizing and Commemorating Anniversary of Overturning of Roe v. Wade

WHEREAS, I recognize the importance of protecting the most vulnerable members of our society, including the preborn; and

WHEREAS, on June 24, 2022, the United States Supreme Court made a historic decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, a ruling that had stood for nearly five decades and had significant implications for the laws surrounding abortion in our nation; and

WHEREAS, this landmark decision returned the authority to regulate abortion to the individual states, allowing each state to establish laws that reflect the values and beliefs of its citizens; and

WHEREAS, I acknowledge this decision as an affirmation of states' rights and the principle of federalism, allowing for a more localized approach to governance and policy-making; and

WHEREAS, this decision reaffirms the principles that align with our community's values, emphasizing the importance of upholding the dignity and sanctity of human life from conception to natural death; and

WHEREAS, I recognize the profound impact this decision has on the lives of many and commit to supporting women, children, and families in our community through compassion, resources, and services; and

WHEREAS, I honor and commend the tireless efforts of individuals, organizations, and legislators who have worked diligently to advocate for life and to bring about this momentous change in our nation' s legal landscape; and

WHEREAS, I extend my gratitude to all the organizations and individuals who continually support families after their choice of life, providing essential resources, guidance, and care; and

WHEREAS, I also recognize the importance of supporting women who have made the choice for abortion, acknowledging that hope, peace, and healing can be found within our loving community.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Robert Burns, Mayor of the City of Monroe, North Carolina, do hereby proclaim June 24, 2024, as a day of recognition and commemoration of the anniversary of the overturning of Roe v. Wade. I encourage all citizens to reflect on the significance of this decision, to support life-affirming initiatives, and to promote a culture of respect and dignity for all human life.
